Everyone's chasing prompt engineering. But the skill that actually commands a premium is the one AI can't replicate: knowing what good looks like. Domain expertise just became more valuable, not less.

The highest-paid skill in an AI world isn't prompting.

It's knowing what good looks like.

Business processes. Data governance. AI governance. The big picture of how a company actually works, where the money flows, where the risk hides, and what happens downstream when someone makes a bad decision upstream.

That's the skill. And it just became more valuable, not less.

Everyone Learned to Prompt

Let's get this out of the way. Prompting is not a career.

It was a useful skill in 2023 when the models were rough and you needed to coax them into coherent output. It mattered when the difference between a good prompt and a bad one was the difference between gibberish and something usable.

That gap is closing fast. The models are getting better at understanding vague input. They're getting better at asking clarifying questions. They're getting better at inferring what you meant from context.

Within two years, maybe less, "prompt engineering" will feel like "Google search optimization for individuals." It will be a baseline literacy, not a differentiator. Everyone will be able to talk to AI and get reasonable output.

The question is: will you know if that output is right?

The Real Bottleneck

Here's what I see in the field, working with real companies trying to integrate AI into their operations.

The bottleneck is never the model. The bottleneck is never the prompt. The bottleneck is almost always someone in the room who can look at the output and say: "That's wrong. Here's why. Here's what it should be."

A language model can draft a contract. But it takes a lawyer to know that the indemnification clause is backwards and will expose the company to liability it didn't intend to accept.

A language model can generate a financial summary. But it takes someone who understands accrual accounting to notice that the revenue recognition is off by a quarter and the board will be making decisions based on numbers that don't reflect reality.

A language model can write a compliance report. But it takes someone who's actually read the EU AI Act to know that the risk classification is wrong and the company is about to file a document that says they're low-risk when they're actually high-risk.

The model doesn't know what it doesn't know. And it delivers its mistakes with the same confidence as its correct answers. The only thing standing between that confident mistake and a real-world consequence is a human who knows the domain well enough to catch it.

That human just became the most valuable person in the room.

Business Process Knowledge

Let me be specific about what "domain expertise" means in practice, because it's not abstract.

The first layer is business process knowledge. Understanding how work actually flows through an organization.

AI can automate a workflow. But if you automate the wrong workflow, or automate it in the wrong order, or automate it without understanding the exception handling that the current manual process quietly absorbs, you create a system that works perfectly on paper and fails catastrophically in practice.

I've seen this happen. A company automates their invoice processing with AI. The model extracts data from invoices, matches them to purchase orders, routes them for approval. Beautiful system. Except nobody told the AI that when a vendor sends a credit memo, it looks almost identical to an invoice, and the correct action is the opposite. The system processed credit memos as invoices for three weeks before anyone noticed. Because nobody on the implementation team understood the actual accounts payable workflow deeply enough to test for that case.

The AI didn't fail. The process knowledge failed. And that kind of knowledge lives in the heads of people who've been doing the work for years, not in the heads of people who know how to write a good system prompt.

Data Governance

The second layer is data governance. Understanding what data you have, where it came from, what it means, and what you're allowed to do with it.

AI is hungry for data. Every implementation starts with "let's feed it our data." And most companies have no idea what state their data is in.

Duplicate records. Inconsistent formats. Fields that mean different things in different systems. Data that was collected under one consent framework and is about to be used in a way that violates it. Personally identifiable information mixed into training sets that should never have contained it.

Someone has to look at the data pipeline and ask the hard questions. Is this data accurate? Is it current? Is it complete? Do we have the right to use it for this purpose? What happens when the model makes a decision based on data that was wrong at the point of entry?

These aren't AI questions. These are data governance questions. And they require someone who understands data lineage, data quality, regulatory requirements, and the specific context of what each field actually represents in the business.

You can't prompt your way out of bad data. You need someone who knows what clean data looks like for your specific domain.

Ai Governance

The third layer is AI governance. And this is where things get genuinely consequential.

The regulatory landscape for AI is moving fast. The EU AI Act is in force. Industry-specific regulations are emerging in financial services, healthcare, education, and employment. Companies that deploy AI without a governance framework aren't just taking a business risk. They're taking a legal one.

AI governance requires understanding risk classification, bias testing, transparency requirements, human oversight obligations, documentation standards, and incident response procedures. It requires knowing when a model's output needs human review before action. It requires understanding what "explainability" means for your specific use case and your specific regulator.

None of this is about prompting. All of it is about domain knowledge applied to a new technology.

The people who understand both the regulatory environment and the technical capabilities are extraordinarily rare right now. And they command a premium because the cost of getting governance wrong isn't a bad blog post. It's a fine, a lawsuit, or a headline.

The Big Picture

The fourth layer, and maybe the most important, is big-picture business understanding. Knowing how the pieces fit together.

AI is powerful at individual tasks. Summarize this document. Classify this email. Extract these fields. Generate this report. It's less powerful at understanding how those individual tasks relate to the broader strategy of the business.

When a CEO asks "should we automate our customer onboarding process," the answer isn't a technical one. It's a business one. What does our current onboarding experience signal about our brand? Where do customers drop off, and why? What's the lifetime value difference between a customer who had a human onboarding experience and one who didn't? What happens to our support load if we automate onboarding but the automation handles edge cases poorly?

AI can help answer each of those sub-questions. But someone has to know which questions to ask. Someone has to understand the business well enough to see the second-order effects. Someone has to be the one who says "yes, the AI can do this, but should we?"

That person isn't a prompt engineer. That person is a domain expert who also understands what AI can and can't do.

The New Premium

So here's my prediction for the next three to five years.

The people who command the highest premiums won't be the ones who are best at using AI tools. Tool proficiency will be table stakes. Everyone will use AI the way everyone currently uses spreadsheets: competently, routinely, without thinking much about it.

The premium will go to people who combine deep domain knowledge with AI literacy. People who understand their industry's regulations, their company's data, their sector's business processes, and the specific ways that AI can go wrong in their context.

These are the people who can stand between an AI output and a business decision and say with authority: "This is right, proceed" or "This is wrong, here's why, here's the fix."

They're not just using AI. They're governing it. They're the quality gate. They're the reason the company can trust its AI outputs enough to act on them.

And they're worth every dollar they charge because the alternative is trusting AI outputs without that gate. Which is how companies end up processing credit memos as invoices, filing incorrect regulatory documents, making strategic decisions on hallucinated data, or deploying biased models that generate lawsuits.

What This Means for You

If you're early in your career, don't just learn to prompt. Learn a domain. Go deep on finance, or healthcare, or logistics, or compliance, or manufacturing, or whatever industry genuinely interests you. Learn how the work actually gets done. Learn where the edge cases live. Learn what "good" looks like from people who've been doing it for decades.

Then layer AI on top of that. You'll be unstoppable. Because you'll be the person who can use the tool and judge its output and know when to override it.

If you're mid-career and worried about AI replacing you, hear this: your experience is the asset. The ten thousand hours you spent learning your domain's patterns, exceptions, and failure modes are exactly what AI cannot replicate. AI can pattern-match across its training data. It cannot replicate your judgment about what matters in your specific context.

The threat isn't AI. The threat is someone with your domain expertise who also knows how to use AI. The solution is to become that person.

If you're a business leader deciding where to invest, invest in your domain experts and give them AI tools. Don't replace your experienced people with junior people plus AI. The junior people won't know what good looks like. They'll accept AI outputs at face value. And you'll pay for that in ways that don't show up until it's too late.

Domain Expertise Just Became More Valuable

Everyone's chasing the tool. The real leverage is in the judgment.

AI made it possible for anyone to generate output at scale. Financial models, legal documents, marketing copy, code, analysis, reports. All of it can be generated in seconds.

But generating output and generating correct output are two completely different things. And the distance between those two things is measured in domain expertise.

The highest-paid skill in an AI world isn't telling the machine what to do.

It's knowing whether the machine did it right.
